Steve Jobs: Genius by Design

$

Look what arrived from The Book Depository today!  It's not an iPad -- it's my copy of the graphic biography Steve Jobs: Genius by Design which I had been waiting for since I wrote about it last March.

Published by my favorite graphic novel publisher Campfire Graphic Novels, Steve Jobs: Genius by Design is a beautifully drawn graphic biography that I was able to finish reading in 1.5 hours tops!

I was thinking, why would I want to read Isaac Walterson's 700-page biography when I could get the entire story in a more entertaining 100-page format here!

The book starts with an introduction of the major characters and people in Steve's life, and all the important milestones in his life are included and told in very colorful illustrations.

Reading in the year 2012

According to my personal book catalog Book Collector,  I was able to read 39 books in 2012. Not bad considering that I gave birth to my first baby and I'm also working full time! :-D

The best for me was Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.  It was the most riveting especially since it's a true story.  The thickest was Stephen King's The Stand at 1,400 pages (the thickest book I've read in my life so far,) while the thinnest was George Orwell's Animal Farm at 79 pages.   The worst for me was Cassandra Clare's City of Ashes.  (Sorry to those who are crazy about this series but I didn't bother to read the next book after that.)   The most surprising was Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera.  It had sooo much more to it than the musical/film.     The most enjoyable ones,  as always, are Alexander McCall Smiths' The Charming Quirks of Others and The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party.   I also enjoyed Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol.

In terms of genre they are as follows:

21% - Classics
21% - Fiction / Literary Fiction
21% - Mysteries and Thrillers
18% - Young Adult
13% - Children's
 8% - Biographies and Memoirs

Books I read in 2012.  Some were borrowed so this photo's not complete :-) Some of the missing books are Inkheart, Animal Farm, and Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol.
Books I read in 2012.  Some of them were borrowed so they're not all in this photo! :-)

It also says that I purchased a total of 35 books in that year from the following book stores as follows:
31% were from Fully Booked,
23% from The Book Depository
21% from National Book Store and sister companies (Powerbooks, Bestsellers, A Different Bookstore)
20% from random sources (2nd hand stores, friends, etc.)
5% from Amazon!

I didn't realize how much I was getting from The Book Depository until I actually counted it!   I love that they ship worldwide for FREE, except I only wish they could ship faster.  The average is about 3-6 weeks from the time I make the order, but could take as long as 8 weeks.  But hey, it's still faster than a balikbayan box if I order from Amazon!  LOL.

So there you have it, my book stats for 2012 :-D
All in all I would consider it one of my best reading years!  Here's to more great reading years ahead!

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett

"Reading is definitely not for passing the time. One actually wishes that one had more of it"

If you like to think of yourself a reader, then you will love reading about this most uncommon reader, Her Majesty the Queen of England herself.  Written with a lot of wit and notable charm, The Uncommon Reader is a testament to the wonders of reading.  By using the queen as the subject of his book, Alan Bennett was able to discuss profound and interesting insights into why we read - and don't read - as Her Majesty embarks on this remarkable journey.

The book, a short novella of only 120 pages, has a simple enough plot. It starts when the queen discovers a travelling library parked outside the Buckingham Palace.  Not wanting to waste her trip she borrows a book by Ivy Compton Burnett which turns out to be too dry for her. Unfazed she returns for another one and settles for Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love which she thoroughly enjoyed. Then one book leads to another and she was addicted to reading.

Together with Norman, a bibliophile working as a kitchen helper at the palace whom she met at the moving library, she embarks on a journey of literary discovery. From Nancy Mitford to Marcel Proust, from popular fiction to ethnic literature, the Queen takes her reading to a serious level, and discovers not just the joys of reading but also herself.

If you are a reader then you know the many challenges of reading. The never-ending list of books to be read can be daunting, but the queen discovered her new passion for books at a late time so she devoured book after book as fast as she could to make up for it.   When asked why she suddenly started reading, she simply answers that she has always been able to read, only she was reading more.  When her staff started to get irritated with her new found 'pass time' thinking that to read was to withdraw and to exclude herself, she simply replies that reading is definitely not for passing the time. It is about opening yourself to other lives and other worlds. On the contrary one actually wishes that one had more time to read. And because everyone else can read, then it shouldn't exclude.

Alan Bennett
If people read tabloids, magazines and newspapers instead of books would you consider that as reading? With wit and charm Bennett discusses issues like this about reading today, including literature, the difference between briefing and reading, and cites many authors including EM Forster, Dylan Thomas, Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen and Alice Munro to name a few. Even if what people read are not books it's still reading to me, except Mr. Bennett doesn't seem to think so.  Thus, the queen is proud to be setting a good example by being seen reading a book in public, even fishing in her handbag for her book and letting them catch a glimpse of what she is currently reading.

But what I found particularly loved about The Uncommon Reader was how it was able to capture in one book that reading is a journey. It matures and develops as one takes it further. In the beginning the queen read popular fiction and copied passages that struck her. Later she would write down her comments and thoughts on them, her own literary criticism so to speak.  Eventually she could read more 'difficult' books with ease and delight, up to the point when she realized that she didn't want to be simply a reader. Reading, though highly enjoyable, was not doing.

Aside from chronicling the queen's reading journey and challenges and talking about the issues on current reading habits, the book is not without its light moments, such as when her security connives with her footman to hide the book she was reading after she leaves it in the coach.   Though there are occasions  when i couldn't read Bennett's long sentences without stumbling, i found his writing to be charming, funny and witty overall.

The book concludes when the Queen's reading journey takes her to the point when she realizes that when she is writing she was doing, and she had always been a doer.  Because, according to her, you don't put your life into books. You find it there.

When It's Gone, It's Gone: The Book Depository's 100 Books in 25 hours

Yesterday I had the uncanny experience of witnessing some 10,000 books (100 titles in 100 copies each) get sold out in a matter of seconds.  The Book Depository, an online bookseller that ships free worldwide, was behind this one-of-a-kind book sale where in a book would be offered at a huge discount (even up to 100% off) every 15 minutes for 25 hours, selling a total of 100 titles in 100 copies each.

I thought I was early when I logged in at 8:05 on Thursday night. I was very wrong because the first offer, a signed hardback copy of Salman Rushdie's Luka and the Fire of Life offered at 100% OFF (can you believe it?) was already sold out!  Fans who were logged in to The Book Depository's Facebook page commented that it sold out in 15 seconds flat!

Offer #1: Signed Copy at 100% off! Sold out 15 seconds!

I couldn't believe it so I took screenshots just to show how fast these offers go. Here was an offer for Albert Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus (which I have never heard of.)   This book was offer #96 already but just to give you an idea, I took this screenshot as the 15 minute interval started.  Pay close attention to the number of copies...

After a few seconds....
So in less than 2 minutes....
If there was going to be another signed copy I didn't want to miss it! So I browsed the net while waiting for the next offer without realizing that the 15 minutes had already passed and the next offer had sold out again!  Oh no, this needed a bit of a strategy, so I set my iPhone to alarm every 15 minutes like this:

This strategy worked for me and I managed to bag a hardback copy of The Original Frankenstein for only $8.49 (I couldn't remember the original price.)

The Original Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

It wasn't signed but I learned that I was already lucky considering several people were having difficulty getting anything even if they clicked on the checkout button as soon as a new offer was up. Everyone was doing the same thing so the site would jam especially for those without broadband. By the time they refreshed their browsers the item was already sold out, much to the disappointment of some fans who gave up out of frustration after trying several times.

The type of books offered were a wide variety, from fiction books to non fiction books. The Book Depository promised to publish a complete list of the offers here here but at the time of this writing the list was still empty.  While some titles were noteworthy, such as this complete set of Jane Austen's novels,  Penguin Great Ideas titles, and Lego mixed media sets,

Jane Austen's Complete Novels

 Penguin Great Ideas Series

From $25 to $10

...some were downright hilarious, including

Why Are Orangutans Orange?
The Mammoth Book of Gorgeous Guys
but they sold out anyway!  This shows how people will buy anything with a huge ##% OFF and a countdown next to it even if they will probably never use it!   It's a great strategy for Book Depository to dispose of slow-moving titles.  A friend who is a fellow book blogger is one of these people, but she said she was going to use it for her blog give-away!  OK then, she's excused! :-)

Offer #100 was Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Linger, Forever Trilogy, and just like the last 99 books, I saw it get devoured like this:

One..

...Two...
...Three!
In all this frenzy panic buying was not uncommon. Several fans commented on Facebook that they got something they didn't really want because they clicked on the check-out button without thinking just to get the deal.   The Book Depository allows cancellation of such orders, but since these would not be re-offered it resulted to some strong objections from other buyers would have wanted to buy a copy of the title.

I didn't try to purchase another one after Frankenstein, but some fans got 3-4 books.   Throughout the entire sale The Book Depository was present on Facebook, actively replying to customers' technical problems or cancelling impulse orders.  After the 100th title they deserved a bit of a lie down!  Kudos to their staff!

All in all I enjoyed this sale, if not for the great bargains, for its novelty and the feeling of being connected to a worldwide audience of book lovers all participating in the same activity.  I can't wait for the next one!

You probably know by now how much I love Alexander McCall Smith's books, particularly his series The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and The Sunday Philosophy Club. So while waiting for the next installment of both series I decided to try his other one--44 Scotland Street.

The book is about the varied characters who live on 44 Scotland Street.  There's Pat, a 20-year-old who leaves her parents and lives independently for the first time; Bruce, a self-absorbed Greek god-look alike; Domenica, an eccentric elderly lady; and Bertie, a gifted child whose mother Irene pushes him to learn the saxophone and to speak Italian--all at the tender age of five.

When I started the first book I began to think I was in for a disappointment.  What I thought would be a another light yet insightful read turned out to be a bit heavier than I expected. Unlike The No. 1 and Sunday series where the leading characters were true and good-hearted, this one was filled with characters with a lot of issues, such as Bruce, Irene and Lizzie. Matthew, though, has a kind heart and has the potential to be a strong and principled character but he's not there yet. Patseems to be a well-grounded person but needs to build her maturity and strength of character some more.  Then there's Domenica and Angus Lordie. Domenica reminds me very much of Isabelle Dalhousie. To me she is like a sneak preview of how Isabelle's character is going to be.

The book though is not just a sampler of Edinburgh city life, but also an delightful collection of human insights.  McCall smith touches on universal issues such as the growing insecurity of men, the effect of overly pushy mothers on their childrenespecially on young boys, and the idealism of the youth.   Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:

"Men were a mess these days - virtually all of them. Women had destabilised them, made them uncertain about themselves; undermined their confidence. And then, when the men fell to pieces, the women tried to put them together again. But it was too late. The damage had been done."
"The young rarely believe that they will not be able to get what they want, because there is always an open future. I may not be beautiful today, but I shall be beautiful tomorrow. I many not have much money today, but that will all change. Not so."
“Daughters could survive a powerful mother, but boys found it almost impossible. Such boys were often severely damaged and spent the rest of their lives running away from their mothers, or from anybody who remotely reminded them of their mothers; either that, or they became their mothers, in a desperate, misguided act of psychological self defence.”

The last thing that sad people want to be reminded about is the greater sadness of others  and I agree. As if a precursor to Isabel Dalhousie, it touches on some moral issues. And just like The Sunday Philosophy Club, there's a lot of discussion aboutScottish art and music.  There is also talk about Scottish politics but which I'm not able to relate much to, unfortunately.

But unlike the other two series this one had several nice illustrations and I rather appreciated them being there.

The plot is simple enough and revolves around the petty desires and troubles of these Scottish citizens, the highlight of which was a wild-goose-chase after a lost painting, then ends with a rather satisfying discovery. My favorite character is Bertie, and, having a son myself, I'm eager to find outif Bertie will someday be able to enjoy his childhood. As I turned the last page I was pleasantly surprised to find myself wishing for more from 44 Scotland Street. But then I should've known that you can't expect anything less from Mr. McCall Smith!

Evil Water by Inger Wolf

Inger Wolf
From Danish crime writer Inger Wolf comes a new crime series that is well-poised to compete side-by-side with the some of the best English crime novels in the international scene! Evil Water is the 5th book in her crime series starring Deputy Superintendent Daniel Trokic, and the first book to be released in English in ebook format.

Synopsis: Two unrelated women who look uncannily alike disappear without a trace, and the same autumn a farmer on the outskirts of Århus finds them murdered in suitcases under a heap of stone. The skin of one woman is filled with the letter Y and the other has a rare flower in her hair. Inspector Daniel Trokic is leading the case which goes in several directions: to a tribal population in Africa, religious insanity and a horrifying meeting with leeches. When a third woman disappears, Trokic is under pressure to find out what the killer wants to say with his macabre scenery and rituals and later discovers that they are inexplicably linked to the case of a woman who killed herself twenty years ago....

Evil Water has all the elements of a gripping crime story, starting with two mysterious women who are found dead and buried in a ritualistic grave.  Fans of forensics will be delighted with the various evidence discovered and examined in this page-turner, including mysterious bite marks on the victims, strange flowers, and missing bones.  It felt like watching an episode of CSI:Arhus as I saw geographic profiling being used in action to catch this killer as well as other modern tools such as computer forensics.

Inger Wolf included little vignettes which shifted the story away from the investigation into the mind of the killer as he did his dirty work.  I loved these because it was the core of this frightening mystery and defined the danger and challenge that Detective Trokic and his team were up against.   Trokic reminds me of James Patterson's Alex Cross, and the killer vignettes reminded me of those found in Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme novels. It didn't bother me that the book was translated into English from the original Danish because it was so well-written it didn't feel like a translation at all to me.  Casual and spontaneous, the English read rather smoothly.

I also loved the way Wolf subtly embeds little clues in the narrative about the killer's identity which you dismiss as trivial detail as read along. Everytime a clue would lead to a new person you always thought "it must be him", only to find out later on that he's not and the case develops further.  Her masterful plot filled with unexpected twists and surprising turns keeps you guessing until the very end.   As I reached the end of this macabre page-turner I found myself wanting for more from Detective Trokic and his team.

The second installment to Alexander McCall Smith's series 44 Scotland Street,Espresso Tales, was so deliciously satisfying! Mr. McCall Smith says in the introduction that this installment ties up many of the loose ends left in the first book. First of all, narcissistic Bruce, after losing his job as a surveyor, decides to plunge into the wine trade without any prior knowledge and gets what he deserves. Our hopes of him finally seeing himself for what he really is may just become a possibility. Then easy-going and kindhearted Matthew who failed at every business endeavor his millionaire dad set up for him suddenly starts making a profit at his art gallery.  When his father finds a new girlfriend Matthew thinks she's only after his money and the two have a heart to heart talk.

Then of course, our beloved Bertie, our favorite 6-year-old prodigy, finally gets a chance at playing in a rugby game for real but decides it's not for him. Desperately unhappy under his mother's iron grip, Bertie's father Stuart finally decides to intervene.  Bertie now has a chance to enjoy his boyhood-with train rides, bowling games and all.  But the highlight of it all was Pat...attending a shocking nudist party! I've never heard of this kind of party before and it was kind of eye-opening for me!

Delightfully charming, witty, and entertaining, 44 Scotland Street was a blast.  I wonder what could be in store for us in the 3rd installment!

Q&A with Mayet Ligad Yuhico, Filipino author of novel Fourteen Days

I met Mayet Ligad Yuhico at the 2011 Manila International Literary Festival. It was then when I learned about her novel Fourteen Days. I'm not particularly a fan of romance novels so I didn't give much thought to it until one day when I came across a copy and decided to give it a try.    Now I'm happy to say that I enjoyed it very much!

Instead of writing the usual book review, I decided to try a different approach - a Q&A.  As a Filipino I'm always happy to find more pinoys reading and writing books.  So I would like to talk about Mayet and her novel with the hope that more people would learn about it and read it too.

Mayet Ligad Yuhico
Mayet is the author of two published works including Fourteen Days, her first full-length novel.  She is also a visual artist who has trained with painters and world-renowned artists.

According to the novel's website, Fourteen Days is the story of world-famous actress Auberon Wallace whose mother dies and leaves a will asking her to read hundreds of unopened letters from her former husband Luke Scoprire.  The letters compel her to explore events that have happened years ago, events she had never acknowledged till now.  With the will containing a condition that the letters would be burned fourteen days from her mother’s burial, Auberon is forced to confront the past, no matter how painful it is.

A novel on love, loss and redemption, Fourteen Days is a 120,000 word contemporary, romantic novel divided into fourteen chapters: each chapter a day in the life of Auberon as she embarks on an extraordinary journey wrestling with her Mother’s wishes to confront the past against her own need to create a future between two men who has shaped her life into what it is now.

Q&A With Mayet Ligad Yuhico:

    1. As a Filipino writer, what made you decide to set your first novel in America, and have have main characters who were Americans (i.e. instead of Filipinos?)
Some authors process the plot and characters in their head, as in the case of Pulitzer winner Edward P. Jones who wrote the plot of “The Known World” in his head for ten years. His novel was cited by Time as one of the best novels of the decade (2000-2009).

In my case, it is when I write that characters and plots reveal themselves to me. As in the process of creation, the work takes a life of its own. Sometimes, even if I wanted a certain course of action to happen, the characters have a say in what happens. So I’m just a medium for all these creative plots happening in an alternate universe. Of course, the writer provides a framework, and has the final say in the end product.

(And so, this is what I’ve always told fledgling artists who dream of finishing a novel,  or any work of art. The best way to create is just to flex that creative muscle every single day. Just do it!)

In the case of “Fourteen Days”, I did not deliberately set out to situate my novel in America, nor create characters that were Americans. The fact that Auberon’s early childhood was spent in the Philippines technically makes her a Filipina since she knows the language, and is familiar with the culture of the Filipinos, as evidenced by her love of Philippine soul food – merienda fare like turon and ginataan!

I just wanted to write a novel that I wanted to read, and I’ve always been drawn to characters facing impossible situations. I wanted to see how two people with the most fortunate of circumstances face these herculean challenges in their life.

What’s more herculean than a billionaire and a top Hollywood actress, who both seemed to live charmed lives, but had a past that continues to haunt them till present day?

The perfect backdrop for these two characters is New York, where Luke’s corporate office was based. Auberon was a painter before she became an actress, and I’d imagined she would have loved to roam around the museums all day to draw inspiration, or to while away her time when she’s free. If a painter had the means to choose any location in the world as a home address, New York would make sense because the major museums are all accessible by walking. This is the reason why I decided to let Auberon live in 5th Avenue, which is spitting distance from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

        2. Tell us about Ava's character. She is a famous movie star and her story brings the reader into the world of filmmaking, including on location shoots, make-up, costumes, the works. What/who was your inspiration behind her character? Did you have to research about the lives of famous actresses?
I worked in PETA (Philippine Educational Theatre Association) while I was in college and post-college. It was one of the most defining periods in my life as I was exposed to artists who eventually became pillars of filmmaking in the country – LinoBrocka, Joel Lamangan and SoxyTopacio comes to mind.

The creative process was so intense under these demanding taskmasters that I felt like I completed a graduate degree in theatre when I was exposed to these mentors. I also saw how difficult being an actor was, since one used body, mind and soul, to make a character come to life.

The role and function of an actor remains the same whether it is in the theatre, movies or television, all accoutermentschange - the make-up, costumes, the set conditions depend on which medium is used.

My inspiration for the young Auberon as an artist is a composite of all the visual artists I have known and met here and abroad. I’ve attended some workshops at the Scottsdale Artists School, and based many of the scenes in the novel on the school and its environs.

My inspiration for Auberon as a film star is a composite of all the major actresses in Hollywood who are under the constant glare of the paparazzis. There is not one interview I’ve read of actresses who really enjoy the glare of the spotlight. After the initial rush of fame, most of the actresses feel objectivized, like moving targets in a shooting gallery.

3.What about the character of Luke Scoprire? Was his character inspired by anyone in particular?
              Can I answer that posthumously?

This is quite funny, but my inspiration for the young Luke is the opposite of my husband.  Not young Luke’s possessive qualities, but the reverse.

I met my husband when we were teenagers, and all the time that I was working in theatre, going home early in the morning after a particularly hectic night of rehearsals, my then boyfriend never complained, nor asked me to give up my love for the theatre. I just felt that it was extraordinary discipline on his part not to stifle me in my growth as an artist. Even at that young age, he was very unselfish and let me live my life the way I wanted to.

I was wondering what I would do, if like Auberon, the opposite situation presented itself. I guess she would have bolted from the relationship the very second she’d realized how stifling this relationship is.

Luke Scoprire was a very brash, possessive individual in his youth, and I based his character on the tech moguls who earned their first billion in their 20’s – Apple’s Steve Jobs, Facebook’s Zuckerberg and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey come to mind. It takes a lot of ego to believe in an idea, and shepherd it till it becomes a reality, and usually these young moguls had the same characteristics as the young, brash Scoprire.

What is interesting is how Luke Scoprire changed when he saw how devastating his actions were to a free spirit like Auberon. And there, Luke’s metamorphosis happened as the novel progressed.

4.Fourteen days is a love story that is also mixed with a bit of mystery surrounding Ava's accident and her relationship with her former husband Luke Scoprire whom she remembers nothing of. What gave you the idea of the letters which she has to read in 14 days?
I was inspired by my friend Evelyn Talamayan’s heart-wrenching story of surviving an operation to remove a big tumor in her brain. After she regained consciousness, her memory was gone. At the time of the operation, she was married with two small kids. Evelyn had no memory of them when she woke up. She also couldn’t read or write simple sentences. In short, all cognitive processes were wiped out.

But when her husband approached her, and introduced himself as her spouse, she responded to him and believed him. Although all cognitive processes were gone, the memories of the heart could not entirely be erased. It was Evelyn’s husband who taught her how to read and write again, and in two years, she was back at her job.  Evelyn eventually emigrated to Canada, and the last time I met her around eight years ago, she was finishing her PhD studies.

In Ava’s case, when Luke introduced himself as her husband after the accident, she reacted violently and did not believe him. So I thought, what would Luke do after this devastating accident? I would think that Luke would be in need of an activity while Auberon was in a coma. Writing letters to her would be logical, since he had been writing to her ever since they met.

In the end, it was the letters which Auberon’s mother retrieved from the trash can that meshed the whole story to its completion.

5.What was the role of the Romney paintings in the story? (I have my theories but I would like to hear it from you :) )
I saw the Romney painting at the Frick museum, and as I’ve written in the novel, the very feelings Auberon felt, were also experienced by me.

It was painted three hundred fifty years ago, but I felt like Emma Hart was alive in the flesh. It was like a literal thunderbolt hitting me. I was flabbergasted. It was an out of body feeling, and as a painter myself, I knew that Romney, the person who put oil on linen, who painted her for a period of time was so in love with her, that the emotions he had when doing the painting could still be felt by the viewer at present time.

And so I used the Romney painting to serve as an emotional bridge between Luke and Auberon’s past and present.

6.You are a visual artist, but you are also a writer with two published works including Fourteen Days. Would you consider yourself as an artist first and a writer second, or the other way around? Why?
"The Blue Gift" by Mayet Ligad Yuhico
I enjoy being a writer and a visual artist since it uses both sides of the brain.

As a writer, I feel that I use the left brain more, since I use logic, analytical thinking to process the very complicated rules of the English language.

In painting, I use colors that do not even have a formal name, or create imagery which could not be explained by words, completely opposite of the left brain functions.

I just consider myself an artist, period. The tools change, whether it’s pen or a brush. I am just happy using all my talents to exhaustion. I would love to live to a hundred, since I still have so many books to write, and paintings to put on canvas.

If my works of art give pleasure to other people, my happiness is inestimable.

After three long years, I finally got my hands on the latest installment in the Lincoln Rhyme Series, The Kill Room, and reading it was like coming home. This series is one of my most loved crime novels in the world.   I discovered Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme Series when I first read The Empty Chair and since then I was hooked.  To me Jeffery Deaver is the king of forensics crime fiction.  Beginning with The Bone Collector, which was adapted into film starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie, Jeffery Deaver has been writing about bloodspatter patterns and friction ridge prints.

                          Multi-awarded bestselling author Jeffery Deaver
Multi-awarded Jeffery Deaver uses the fact that in reading a book you don't SEE the characters or the events so you IMAGINE or ASSUME them to be something, so he takes this into advantage, makes a twist out of them and takes you by surprise.   Each book takes you from the beginning to the end of a gripping story that is never what it seems.

Here is more information from the The Lincoln Rhyme Series: (From http://www.jefferydeaver.com)
Lincoln Rhyme, ex-head of NYPD forensics, was the nation's foremost criminalist, the man who could work a crime scene and come away with a perfect profile of the killer, frozen in time. Now, Lincoln is frozen in place — permanently. An accident on the job left him a quadriplegic who can move just one finger, a great mind strapped to his bed, mulish and sarcastic, hiding from a life he no longer wants to live.

If you're a book lover like me I know you have a tendency to splurge on books! But you also can't resist going to the book fair this year, so here are a few tips on how you can maximize and economize at the same time!

                          1.  Get free passes

National Book Store, Fully Booked, and several other book stores and publishers are giving away free entrance passes like these to the book fair!  Visit their stores and get your hands on one of them to save on the P20 entrance fee!  Yes it may just be P20 but better to let that go into your transpo, snacks or book budget instead!

Thank you to Read Philippines for my free passes!

Fully Booked's passes admit two persons per pass and serve as a bookmark too.

                          2.  Know the exhibitors and activities

Do your homework prior to your visit so you can plan your trip accordingly.  Get as much information as you can about who's going to be there and what's happening.

Also interesting to noteis National's schedule of activities which include several book signings with local and international authors alike. Looking forward to those this Sunday!

                          3.  Meet authors and have your books signed

It's not everyday that you meet authors, and it's free! (other than the cost of the book itself, of course.)  Purchase is not strictly required for most signings so if you're really tight on the budget, you can even bring your previously purchased books to the fair and have them signed by your favorite authors there. I'm not sure what the value of signed books are but I think they're definitely worth more than unsigned ones!
Thank you to Ms Bebang Siy for the sweet message on my copy of her newly launched book Marne Marino and for striking this pose for me as I took her photo. (at Vibal booth)
Stanley Chi, author of the hilarious book Men are from QC, Women are from Alabang, was very accommodating Thank you for signing my copy!

Thank you to Miss Denny a.k.a. HaveYouSeenThisGirl for signing my copy!

                          4.  Buy books by local authors

Don't be like my former self who didn't even bother to cast locally published books a glance.  After a friend's recommendation, I was amazed to discover the quality and variety of local books, not to mention the fact that they are soooooo affordable!  The Precious Pages booth is the place to grab some of these great finds, especially the Visprint area which carries some noteworthy titles.

The Precious Pages booth is a pleasant surprise this year, boasting a generous space with great local titles.

                          Visprint at Precious Pages Booth

Visprint titles include Bob Ong's books, Manix Abrera's Kiko Machine Komix....
...Budjette Tan's Trese at only P140-P175 each...
...and Naermyth by Karen Francisco, our recent book of the month at Read Philippines.

                           5.  Go with your book lover friends and pool your purchases to get freebies

What's a fair without the company of friends?   Get your reading buddies to go with you so you can pool your purchases and get freebies with minimum purchase requirements.   The minimum might seem too high at first but pooling your purchases will make it easier to reach!

There's even a raffle that you can join at Fully Booked!
Each P500 purchase entitles you to a raffle ticket.
There goes my rattle ticket! Crossing my fingers for that iPad....

                          6.  Get free refreshments

If all that shopping has made you hungry, skip the trip to Starbucks and grab a cup of FREE coffee at the Goodwill Bookstore booth instead!  You save P150 and there's even a sofa where you can crash on!

Served steaming hot, my free coffee at the Goodwill Bookstore booth was not bad at all!

                          7.  Let your kids join in the games and activities
I didn't bring my son with me but I'm sure he would've enjoyed the various games and activities.  Several booths had toys and games that kids could enjoy for free, plus interactive storytelling sessions.  Check the schedule of activities for more details.  Here's a photo of Alex the Lion of Madagascar taking photos with fans!

                          8.  Grab great deals

This is it!  What we came to the book fair for!  The point of all that saving was so that we could spend more money on books!  Yehey!

Photos courtesy of National Book Store and Fully Booked FB pages.

                          9.  Learn in the various seminars and forums

The exhibit area is just the tip of the iceberg!  Check out the schedule of activities for a wide range of learning sessions held at the function rooms including "How to Write your own Book" by Isagani Cruz on Saturday at 6 pm, The Filipino Reader Conference at 5:30pm, and storytelling sessions on Sunday.

                          10.  Have fun!

The best part of all!  Not so hard to do when you're surrounded with books!

So far this is the list I came up with. If you want to add some more, by all means please write them in the comments below!  Thanks for reading and enjoy at the fair!

Rainy sunday afternoon at the 34th Manila International Book Fair

It was a rainy Sunday afternoon when my stunning reading buddies and I went for some fantastic book shopping at the 34th Manila International Book Fair!  Being the book nuts that we were, we didn't let the weather keep us from grabbing some great deals!  Thanks to one of our members Ms Ivy and to National Book Store, our entrance was free!

All set and excited, from left to right Read Philippines members Wanda, Jem, Milly, and Bluebartleby

We joined the crowd of book nuts...whoops, be careful there, don't get squished!
Ooh la la!  Easy on the shopping there!

There was of course National and Fully Booked, but the spacious Precious Pages booth was a pleasant surprise!

We met some great people, including the very friendly Ms. Beverly Wico Siy, author of It's A Mens World, our April Book of the Month discussion at Read Philippines which we thoroughly enjoyed!   Ms Bebang was very accommodating. Even though she was all dressed up she took the time to mingle with her readers and chat with us!   Thank you Ms Bebang, hope all authors are like you!

From left to right:  Read Philippines members Milly, Jem, Wanda, Bluebartleby and author Beverly Siy

We also met and had a signing with Kajo Baldisimo, illustrator behind the celebrated series Trese.

Jem with Kajo Baldisimo, illustrator of Trese

After going round and round, we paused to survey our loot:
We paused to survey our loot!  This was just some of it.  Milly and Bluebartleby's were not included in the photo because...they were still shopping! hehehe

All that shopping made us tired so the best part was the refreshments afterwards.  Thank you to my Read Philippines buddies!  I had a great time! Looking forward to our next meet up!  To those who were not able to make it,  we missed you and we empathize with you!  Till the next meet up!

My iced caramel macchiatto was delightfully refreshing!

2013 is the year of Philippine Literature in my reading life.  According to the stats in my book catalog, I read a total of 35 books in 2013, out of which a significant percentage were Philippine Literature.   On top of this, the best book I read was It's a Men's World by Bebang Siy.   My best discovery was the Trese series by Budjette Tan and Kajo BaldisimoI was so engrossed that I finished the series in one night!

Room by Emma Donoghue (not local) also struck me as a memorable and gripping read. Then finally, the most pleasantly enjoyable ones, as always, are Alexander McCall Smith's installments in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, Isabel Dalhousie series and 44 Scotland Street series They are like tea and biscuits on a lazy afternoon.  :)

                          Books I read in 2013

Here is a quick snapshot of what I had read:
                          • Philippine Literature - 34%
                          • Fiction -34%
                          • Classics - 14%
                          • Mysteries and Thrillers - 12%
                          • Biographies and Memoirs - 6%

My books read (35) is 4 books down from 2012 when I read 39 books. But I'm still happy to have been able to even read 35 books because 2013 was a really busy year for me. I was nursing our new baby and my work was in full swing - I was working from 9 am to 8 pm Mondays to Fridays.  It was a miracle I still found time to read at all. :)

When it comes to my acquisitions, I got a total of 40 new books this year as follows:

                          • Philippine Literature - 35%
                          • Fiction - 33%
                          • Classics - 15%
                          • Mysteries and Thrillers - 10%
                          • Biographies and Memoirs - 5%
                          • Children's - 2%
In terms of the format of these acquisitions:
                          • pBooks - 85%
                          • eBooks - 15%
Obviously I still die to hold a physical book in my hands and bask in the glorious scent of freshly printed paper :)  !

About 20% were free (given as gifts or as reviewer copies), and the rest were purchased by me from the following stores:

As you can see, I'm a nut for The Book Depository just like last year,  especially for books by Alexander McCall Smith!

So that's about it, my reading stats for 2013.  What's yours?

The book Mitch Albom signs on TV was mine!

Tuesdays with Morrie is one of my favorite books, so when I heard Mitch Albom was coming to Manila I didn't pass up the opportunity to have him sign my book.

Watch the book that Mitch signs at 29 seconds....

                          ...it was mine!

I have my friend Anime to thank for making this happen.  I had commitments that day so she gladly purchased a copy for me and had it signed!  Thank you Anime!

                          Location: Uno Morato Bookstore
I was invited by the National Book Development Board to attended the launch of the 5th Philippine International Literary Festival and Book Industry Summit (PILFBIS) the other day at Uno Morato Bookstore.   To be held on 12-14 November 2014, this year's Lit Fest will have the theme "The Pressing Issue: Sustainable Business amid ASEAN Integration" and will be held at the Bayanihan Center in Pasig.   The difference this year vs previous years and that of National Bookstore two weeks ago is that this one promises to be wider in scope by looking at the entire book industry, not just authers and publishers but readersr as well!  Hooray!

The aim is to ready the local book publishing industry in time for the integration of ASEAN countries into a single market.    “It is important that all stakeholders in the publishing industry develop and maintain their competitive advantage, especially when they face open regional trade,” says Neni Sta. Romana Cruz, NBDB Chairperson. The event will pull together everyone in the publishing industry, from the authors and editors, printers and publishers, to teachers and librarians, and booksellers and book industry groups.

NBDB has always envisioned a globally competitive book publishing industry for the Philippines. This festival promotes locally published books and talent, and provides a venue for deeper engagement among stakeholders. The convention consists of lectures, panel discussions, paper presentations, conversations among writers, artists, readers, and publishing industry stakeholders, an all-Filipino book fair, exhibits, and performances.

PILFBIS will tackle many facets of book publishing, including issues that stakeholders currently face: best practices, alternative publishing models, a writer’s career, rights management, and readership, among others. It will also engage leading local and foreign industry practitioners to share their experiences and insights. Among them are Eric Huang, Development Director at Made in Me, an award-winning digital agency in London specializing in children’s entertainment and brand development; Linda Tan Lingard, managing parter of Yusof Gajah Lingard Literary Agency in Malaysia; Robin Hemley, writer of “A Field Guide for Immersion Writing: Memoir, Journalism, and Travel” and Director of the Writing Program at Yale-NUS College in Singapore; and Noelle de Jesus, Filipino writer and editor based in Singapore.

Previous festivals have drawn a gamut of heavyweights from the literary scene: International novelists Junot Diaz (“The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao”), Edward P. Jones (“The Known World”), Vikas Swarup (“Q&A/Slumdog Millionaire”), Chris Abani (“Virgin of Flames”), Andy Mulligan (“Trash”); Filipino writers Gemino Abad, Resil Mojares, Alfred Yuson, Jose “Butch” Dalisay, Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo; Editors Ravi Mirchandani of Atlantic Books-UK and Rachel Kahan of G.P. Putnam & Sons-New York, ; Literary Agents Mita Kapur, Jayapriya Vasudevan, and Priya

Doraswamy of Jacaranda Press-India; and other luminaries such as David Parker, Chairman of the Board of the Man Asian Literary Prize, and National Artists Virgilio Almario, Bienvenido Lumbera, and F. Sionil Jose. These dignitaries are among the many speakers who conduct more than thirty literary workshops that span the numerous issues within literature and the publishing industry.

If you love to read but don't always come to literary festivals such as this one, these 6 reasons will make you change your mind and break from your shell!

                          1. Enjoy great discounts on books!

Aklatan, the all-Filipino book fair, will have ALL their titles on sale (up to 30% off) for everyone at the festival. Need I say more?  Just seeing those %off signs is enough to make the book lover in you drop whatever it is you're doing and rush to the nearest book store.  Imagine if you have tons of great titles all put together in one place!   So better ready your wallets for some major finds!

                          2. Meet authors and get your books signed

Nothing gives me a kick more than meeting my favorite authors and having my books signed!  The festival will be teaming with authors and even illustrators so make sure to bring your favorite books with you to the venue!

                          3. Discover great new titles and widen your reading scope.

My love affair for reading began with certain genres. But as my reading life grew I discovered more great titles and genres that I could ever finish in my lifetime.   Events like these helped me a lot in discovering new books that I would not have learned on my own.   Enjoy poetry reading sessions and sit through the best books to be awarded at the Filipino Reader's Choice Awards on the 3rd day.   So come the lit fest and find your next favorite book here!

                          4. Meet fellow book lovers!

As the only avid reader in my family, I've always felt alone with no one to talk to about books.   At the lit fest, you're bound to meet like-minded individuals in every corner just waiting to tell the first person they meet about the latest book they've read. I discovered new titles from fellow readers who like the same books as I do.   Ask them what they think of books you haven't read and in turn, recommend to them your favorite titles.  They'll love you for it!

                          5.  Learn how books are written and published.

This is great especially good for aspiring writers. You'll also learn the issues behind the book industry in the country and how readers can help.  But whether you're a budding author or just an avid reader, this will definitely interest you and make you appreciate even more the book read in your hand and the writers behind them.

                          6. Enjoy a whole day devoted for readers!

This is probably the biggest reason for attending the Lit Fest this year.   Versus previous years and that of National Book Store a few weeks ago, this year's Lit Fest promises to have a wider scope and looks at the entire book industry as whole, not just authors and publishers but also the readers as well.  The 3rd day is the Filipino Reader Conference packed with sessions that are guaranteed to help you discover the power or readers.
